With a sideways glance at Morioka Castle
The entrance to the castle's Sannomaru was closed due to construction work.
Morioka Castle was the residence of the Nanbu clan, and ruled the area from the Azuchi-Momoyama period until the end of the Edo period.
The Nanbu clan is a clan descended from the Seiwa Genji clan, and once lived in the Kai region, but accompanied Minamoto no Yoritomo on his conquest of Oshu, and remained there and were given this land.
During the Nanboku-cho period, they followed Kitabatake Akiie, who ruled the area, and also participated in the subjugation of Ashikaga Takauji.
During the Azuchi-Momoyama period, Nanbu Nobunao approached Maeda Toshiie, who was close to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and participated in the Odawara Conquest, and was granted his territory by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Until then, the Nanbu clan's residence had been located further north, but on the advice of Asano Nagamasa, Nanbu Nobunao decided to build a new residence in the current Morioka area.
Nobunao never saw the castle come to fruition, and it was completed during the reign of his son, Toshinao.
During the Boshin War at the end of the Edo period, the Nanbu clan participated in the Oshu League of Feudal Domains and faced off against the new government, but the Nanbu clan did not become the main battlefield, and it was the last to surrender to the new government forces, following in the footsteps of the Sendai and Aizu clans.
The castle later came under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of the Army, and all of the dilapidated buildings were demolished.
The land was sold to the Nanbu clan, but was later purchased by Iwate Prefecture, and the site is now Morioka Castle Ruins Park.
